“A mass of ants kills an elephant” – calligraphy and contemporary Chinese seal exhibition
It is well-known that Chinese seal is the least significant medium among Chinese art, comparing to literature, calligraphy and painting. By stamping image seal of ants on calligraphy of elephant, to challenge the so-called traditional preceptive.
This project is supported by JCCAC’s Professor Mayching Kao Arts Development Fund. By collaborating with ten calligraphy artist, to explore composition by a series of works which combined by ink bush and Chinese seals.
There is a proverb in Cantonese that “mass ants can kill an elephant.” It means by gathering tiny forces, the power can be strong. Although Chinese seal is standing small among art history, it is wonder that could it be something different under the contemporary context? Wait and see!
About Artist Curator
Kong Hoi Kan, Thomas received his BA in Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University and MA in Cultural Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Once an art administrator, Kong now works full-time as a Chinese seal artist. Taking Han culture as blueprint and orienting at present-day human values, his practice manifests a notion of contemporary seal art. Kong’s works have been collected by corporate and individual collectors. He has also been supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and other social organisations to host exhibitions. Kong proactively hosts workshops, talks and art demonstrations at different commercial entities and universities.
