“Whispering Raindrops” is a musical journey that transcends geography and media, presented by Mello Duo. Curator and percussionist Miko Yau specially invited Taiwanese cellist Tzu-Yi (Tiffany) Yeh, currently based in the United States, to perform in Hong Kong. Inspired by the cultures of Hong Kong and Taiwan, the first half of the program features premiere performances of commissioned works by two renowned composers: Hong Kong composer Professor Chan Hing Yan and Taiwanese composer Professor Paul SanGregory.
The second half turns to a contemporary soundscape, integrating electronic music and theatrical elements to expand the possibilities of sound and performance. Motion graphic designer Caroline Chu from New York University will further engage with the live music through a range of visual media, guiding the audience from sound into sight and immersing them in a richly layered contemporary artistic experience.
Miko Yau is a Hong Kong percussionist who has premiered works by Hong Kong composer Professor Chan Hing-yan at the renowned Carnegie Hall in New York City. She graduated from Boston Conservatory at Berklee with a Master of Music in Performance. During her studies, she won first prize in the 2024 Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition and served as a piano accompanist at the conservatory from 2024 to 2025. Under the full scholarship of the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Translation from The University of Hong Kong.
Yau was selected as a recipient of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s Emerging Artists Development Grant. As part of the funded project, she will present a recital in Hong Kong in July 2026 with her chamber ensemble, Mello Duo, alongside her Taiwanese cellist duo partner. Mello Duo focuses on exploring the integration of Asian cultural elements with the language of contemporary chamber music. During their time in the United States, the duo actively promoted contemporary works by Asian composers, including the world premiere of Professor Chan Hing-yan’s Night Music II at Carnegie Hall in 2025, as well as a performance of Night Music I at Lawrence University after receiving the Lawrence Chamber Music Festival Fellowship Award in 2024.
Yau’s artistic practice encompasses diverse musical styles and interdisciplinary collaborations. In April 2026, she was invited by Théâtre de la Feuille to serve as a musician in the production Papa, performing in Foshan and at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where she was responsible for sound design and operation, as well as live instrumental performance. In January 2026, she performed at Hong Kong International Airport with Ensemble Apeiron as part of a pop music quartet. She also participated as one of the percussionists in Toolbox Percussion’s Mainland China Tour 2025, collaborating with dance and theatre artists in interdisciplinary performance projects.
During her studies at The University of Hong Kong, Yau studied percussion composition and arrangement under Professor Chan Hing-yan. Funded by the university’s Department of Music, she presented a percussion recital showcasing her arrangements. In 2026, she was invited to return to her alma mater as a guest musician for the “Performance Spotlights” series at The University of Hong Kong, continuing her artistic and academic engagement with the university.
